Chapters and Tribes

  • There are many squads working in different cities globally whom we can call a tribe.

  • These squads are made up of a matrix of skills with similar skills or competency areas across squads termed as chapters.

  • A chapter lead is a line manager who is really a servant leader. This allows a squad member to double hat in another squad under the same competency as he still reports to the same line manager.

  • This is not a fixed structure. Squads, chapters and tribes keep changing and this is normal.

Releases to Production

  • The whole reason behind this way of working is to have frequent and quick release cycles.

  • For that, release to production must be made easy so that it can be done often.

  • To make this happen, we invest heavily in test automation and continuous delivery infrastructure.

  • There is a self-service culture where all these tools can be used by different squads to make releases easy.
